The Integrative Medicine Wheel is the combination of therapies that define the concept of Integrative Medicine. As highlighted in the following article, the principle of complementarity is the core of integrative medicine.
The Integrative medicine wheel illustrates how various methods of treatment practiced can combine to give holistic care. There are 8 areas highlighted here that are very distinct in theory and practice but they all can aim to achieve the wellness of human ailments. Some methods like surgery are aimed at quick recovery whilst some methods like Energy and manipulative therapies are aimed at long-term recovery and healing. Methods like herbal and lifestyle / nutritional therapies are aimed at disease-preventative strategies.

The form of medicine combines in Integrative Medicine Wheel are:
- Mind and body Medicine – This therapy utilizes the theory of mind and body interacting to promote physical health. The methods included in this therapy are “imagery/ meditation, biofeedback, relaxation training, breath therapy, hypnosis, hypnotherapy, and psychotherapy”.
Mind and psychological therapies are very popular and used in Western medicine. There are many areas mindfulness has been used with excellent results to alleviate mental health disorders.
- Energy Medicine – Energy Medicine is based on the vibration and energy of the body. Energy therapy handles the mechanism of vibration and energies from outside. There are many energy healing methods including “Acupuncture, homeopathy, Energy field healing (Reiki), Qi gong, spiritual healing, magnetic therapies, electrical stimulation, etc”.
Energy field medicine like Acupuncture has been accepted by Western health authorities and allowed to practice in areas like the treatment of back pain/neck pain and musculoskeletal disorders. Also, Reiki is one of the fast-developing therapy in the medical field for managing stress and psychological disorders. Patients are gaining more confidence and trust in engaging in such therapies.
- Manipulative therapies – This area focuses on physical touch and manipulation to promote healing of the body. Such therapies include “Chiropractic, osteopathy, craniosacral therapy, massage therapy, Bodywork, physical therapy, and hydrotherapy etc”.
Chiropractic and osteopathy have been practiced in Western medicine as a subgroup of complementary treatment. Western medical specialist refers patients for such therapies, and they have proven the effectiveness of such therapies.

Surgical methods have always been given priority in managing trauma, emergency situations where life is in immediate danger.Pharmaceutical or medicinal drugs– Treatment with pharmaceutical methods involve all forms of medicinal drugs, prescription, and over-the-counter drugs.
Medicinal drugs and treatments have spread across many areas in treatments. Medicine can be used for both disease prevention and treatment. The development of the pharmaceutical field has been one of the most advanced areas in modern medicine. There is much positive as well as setback in the use of medicine for disease. The main setback is the spectrum of multiple side effects that are tagged with most pharmaceutical drugs. Patients tend to study the side effects before making the decision to take the medicine.Herbal medicine – Herbal medicine includes any form of therapy that uses extractions from plants that can be used as medicine. The most popular areas that use herbal, medicine is scattered in Western Europe, China, India, and Arabic subcontinents.

Nutritional medicine – Nutritional therapy focuses on specific dietary therapies and nutritional supplements. There is an extremely high priority given to healthy eating and nutritional medicine in the modern world.
Nutritional medicine is one of the fast-developing therapy specialties in the Western world. There are specialized Nutritionists and Dieticians who are engaged in managing various ailments in the digestive system, metabolic disorders, obesity, and allergic disorders. Management of nutritional balance in the body can aid in healing many ailments.
- Lifestyle and behavior – There are many lifestyle changes and behavior patterns that are highly recommended and promoted for human wellbeing. Lifestyle changes include healthy eating, healthy work habits, exercise, stress reduction, rest, healthy sleeping etc.
